CAIRO (AP) — The Confederation of African Football has suspended the chairman of one of Egypt's top soccer clubs for one year and fined him $40,000 for insulting the confederation's head.

The Cairo-based CAF announced the punishment for Murtada Mansour, chairman of Zamalek FC, in a statement on Saturday.

Mansour had sharply criticized CAF for what he said was its failure to condemn abusive chants by fans of Cairo rivals Al-Ahly against Turki Alsheikh, Saudi Arabia's top sports official and the head of the Arab soccer confederation. He also insulted CAF chairman Ahmad Ahmad.

Mansour threatened in a Kuwaiti TV interview to prevent Ahmad from entering CAF's Cairo headquarters and to throw the confederation out of Egypt.
