CAR-NASCAR-HOMESTEAD

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — The championship team is closing after Sunday's race, and the top driver this season has been branded a cheat. The public is hopeful the four cars racing for NASCAR's championship are legal, but won't be assured until the champagne from the title coronation has already dried. Martin Truex Jr. will try to defend his title at Homestead-Miami Speedway against Kevin Harvick, whose team has admitted it cheated two weeks ago because all the other teams were already doing it. Kyle Busch is in the championship race, and Joey Logano, too. But this title race is secondary to the urgent hustle NASCAR is taking to finally end a messy season. By AP Auto Racing Writer Jenna Fryer. UPCOMING: 900 words, photos by noon Saturday.

OLY--TAIWAN-WHAT'S IN A NAME

Taiwan will vote on a referendum this month asking if the self-ruled island should compete as "Taiwan" instead of the present "Chinese Taipei." This would include the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. The controversial referendum has angered China, which sees Taiwan as a break-away province. The International Olympic Committee has already said the name must remain as "Chinese Taipei" under an agreement signed in 1981. The IOC will not change the name no matter the outcome of the referendum. By Stephen Wade. UPCOMING: 1,000 words, photos, video by 3 a.m. Thursday.
