NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Performing rights organization ASCAP put together their first all-female songwriters camp in Nashville, Tennessee, as part of a new music industry diversity initiative called "She Is the Music."

The camp featured writers, producers and engineers who've worked in pop, country, R&B and electronic music genres. Last week they all met with Mary J. Blige, who wanted to inspire them to write a song that she might want to record.

Blige said bringing women artists together was important because music is still a male-dominated industry. She said it was a blessing from God that all those women were able to come together to encourage and embrace each other.

A report this year from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that women were underrepresented as artist, songwriters and producers in popular music.
