WASHINGTON (AP) — The director of the CIA has agreed to brief top senators on the slaying of a Saudi journalist whose death has led to calls to punish the longtime Middle East ally.
A person familiar with the plan tells The Associated Press that CIA Director Gina Haspel will meet Tuesday with Republican and Democratic leaders and top members of national security committees.
Senators from both parties were upset that Haspel was not part of a recent closed-door session with top administration officials about Jamal Khashoggi's killing and the U.S. response.
Khashoggi was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul two months ago. U.S. intelligence officials have concluded that the Saudi crown prince must have at least known of the plot, but President Donald Trump has equivocated over who was to blame.
