LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cicely Tyson is finally getting her Oscar 45 years after her first and only nomination. Tyson is being celebrated Sunday night at the 10th annual Governors Awards in Hollywood alongside publicist Marvin Levy and composer Lalo Schifrin.
Tyson has won Emmys, a Tony, been a Kennedy Center honoree and received a Presidential Medal of Freedom. She says she is grateful to the film academy's board for the honor. The 93-year-old actress and activist was nominated in 1972 for "Sounder," which took the Harlem native to parts of the country she hadn't yet visited.
Tyson recently became a viral sensation thanks to the show-stopping hat she wore to Aretha Franklin's funeral. Tyson says she didn't want to wear it initially but eventually saw it as a tribute to Franklin.
