West Bengal Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Highlights: Big boost for TMC as it secures 29 of 40 seats

Trinamool Congress candidate Mahua Moitra won the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha by 56,705 votes. She defeated BJP’s Amrita Roy. Moitra was expelled from Parliament in December 2023 following the cash-for-query allegations against her.

TMC MP and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee won the Diamond Harbour constituency. He secured victory by a margin of 7,10,930 votes.

TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee took a dig at the BJP and said the saffron party has lost the elections even after spending a huge money. She alleged BJP of attrocities and added "they even lost Ayodhya". 

Cricketer-turned-politician, Yusuf Pathan registered a landslide victory against five-term Congress stalwart Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in Baharampur.

BJP candidate and Union Minister Nisith Pramanik is now in the lead in Cooch Behar seat with a narrow margin of 1,488 votes over TMC's Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia.

Veteran Bollywood actor and TMC candidate from Asansol Shatrughan Sinha is leading in the seat, as per early trends.

Incumbent BJP MP from Darjeeling, Raju Singh Bista, will look to retain his seat against TMC's Gopal Lama and Congress candidate Munish Tamang. BJP has won the seat three consecutive teams, primarily due to support from the Gorkhaland movement. However, the TMC has also expanded its support base in the constituency.

"The counting process is underway at all the places. We have given strict instructions to all the DMs, SPs and COs (central observers) that the process of counting is done transparently and as per rulebook," says Chief Election Commission Rajiv Kumar.

The TMC has fielded Bollywood superstar Shatrughan Sinha, who won the 2022 by-polls for the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency after Babul Supriyo vacated the seat and switched to the TMC. His BJP opponent is Surendrajeet Singh Ahluwalia, who was born in Asansol, represents the Bardhaman-Durgapur constituency and won the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat in 2014. The third party is Jahanara Khan from CPM, who is making her debut.

The TMC surprised everyone by picking former cricketer Yusuf Pathan in the Lok Sabha race from the constituency. Pathan was fielded by West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to find a popular celebrity face among Muslims, as Baharampur has a Muslim-majority population. Pathan's selection prompted criticism from the BJP and Congress for sending 'outsiders'. He will face a tough fight against Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who has won the seat five times in a row.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has written to the West Bengal Chief Election Officer (CEO) demanding repoll at several booths in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, alleging malpractices carried out by the Trinamool Congress during the voting process on Saturday.

Repolling was held on Monday at one booth each in the Barasat and Mathurapur Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal, officials said. The repolling was done on Sunday based on reports of the returning officers, district election officers and observers concerned, officials said.

TMC leader Mahua Moitra has been given another chance to re-enter Parliament after she was disqualified last year in a cash-for-query scandal. A Lok Sabha disciplinary committee ruled to disqualify her from the lower house following allegations by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who accused Moitra of disclosing confidential information of the Indian Parliament to a third party. Moitra vehemently denied the allegations, labelling her disqualification as orchestrated due to her outspoken criticism of Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani.

According to India TV-CNX Exit Poll, the BJP may breach Mamata Banerjee's fortress and is likely to win 22 to 26 seats in West Bengal while the TMC may win 14 to 18 seats in the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Congress may win 1 to 2 seats, according to India TV's Exit Poll.

Out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, the TMC won 34, the Congress clinched four seats and the BJP and CPM won two seats each.

The BJP sprung a major surprise in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by winning 18 seats, a major improvement from the two seats it won in the 2014 elections. The TMC also won 18 seats in the previous elections, and the Congress won two seats.

All eyes would be on the competition in Cooch Behar, Darjeeling, Balurghat, Bardhaman-Durgapur, Murshidabad, Kolkata North, Asansol, Baharampur, Tamluk, Hooghly, Medinipur and Krishnanagar across all seven phases.
