Basirhat Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Basirhat is one of the Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal. The state has 42 parliamentary seats. The Basirhat seat comprises 7 Assembly segments including Baduria, Haroa, Minakhan(SC), Sandeshkhali(ST), Basirhatdakshin, Basirhatuttar, and Hingalganj (SC). The constituency is a GENERAL seat. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are the main parties in the constituency. 

The upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Basirhat will see a triangular contest between the TMC, the BJP and the CPM. The BJP has fielded Sandeshkhali survivor Rekha Patra from this seat. She has been pitted against TMC's Haji Nurul Islam and CPM's Nirapada Sardar. TMC's Nurul Islam has replaced sitting MP and party leader Nusrat Jahan for this general election. 

Who is Rekha Patra?

Rekha Patra, a housewife residing in the troubled region of Sandeshkhali, was leading a quiet life in the Patrapara area of Sandeshkhali, with little involvement in political affairs. However, her name gained national attention when she emerged as a prominent figure leading the protests against alleged sexual violence in Sandeshkhali. It was she who first raised the voice of the women of Sandeshkhali and all three accused expelled TMC MLA Sheikh Shahjahan, Shibu Hazra and Uttam Sardar are behind bars.

Basirhat seat: A look at previous results

In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Nusrat Jahan Ruhi from AITC won the seat with a margin of 350,369 votes. Nusrat Jahan Ruhi was polled 782,078 votes with a vote share of 55.00 per cent and defeated Sayantan Basu from BJP who got 431,709 votes (30.11 per cent). In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, Idris Ali from AITC won the seat and was polled 492,326 votes with a vote share of 38.64 per cent. CPI candidate Nurul Huda got 382,667 votes (30.03 per cent) and was the runner-up.Idris Ali defeated Nurul Huda by a margin of 109,659 votes.
