The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the plea of the State of West Bengal challenging the Calcutta High Court order which transferred the investigation of the municipality recruitment scam to the CBI. A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices Manoj Misra and JB Pardiwala said the apex court is satisfied that the teachers' recruitment scam was linked with the municipal scam.
The teachers' recruitment scam is under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the State of West Bengal, said that the high court had erred in its decision of transferring the matter to the CBI as there was no material to prove that the state government could not investigate the scam.
Sibal argued that the ED had no jurisdiction in the matter and that the agency was just "targeting" officers at this point.
The CBI and ED are probing allegations of irregularities in the recruitment of Group-D staff in the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC).
