A train accident occurred in West Bengal when a speeding freight train collided with the stationed Kanchanjungha Express. The collision took place near Rangapani station after the train had passed Siliguri, en route from NJP to Sealdah. The impact severely damaged three rear coaches, resulting in the deaths of 15 passengers, according to police. Railway authorities have confirmed the incident occurred between Rangapani and Nijbari stations. 

Chief Minister's response

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock over the tragic accident in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. She stated that the Kanchanjungha Express had been hit by a freight train and detailed teams, including the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, doctors, ambulances, and disaster response teams, have been dispatched for rescue and medical assistance. Efforts are underway on a war footing to address the situation.

Casualties feared, rescue operations underway

Katihar DRM stated that while details are still being verified, there are reports of 10 to 15 casualties and dozens of injuries in the train accident. Further information will be provided shortly. All government and private hospitals in the vicinity have been put on alert.

Rescue efforts initiated

Rescue teams from Katihar and New Jalpaiguri (NJP) have been dispatched to the accident site. Medical teams are also en route to assist the injured. The accident involved train number 13174 Kanchenjunga Express, travelling from Agartala to Sealdah, which derailed near Rangapani and Chatharhat. Darjeeling SP and IG North Bengal are at the scene. Disaster Management Groups and NDRF teams have been mobilized to conduct rescue operations.

Hospitals on alert

All government and private hospitals in the vicinity, including those in Kishanganj, Bihar, have been put on high alert to treat the injured from the accident.

The Kanchanjungha Express, travelling from Agartala to Sealdah, derailed between Rangapani and Nijbari. The train was reportedly stationed on the tracks when a speeding freight train collided with it, causing three coaches to derail.

Operational impact

The accident has disrupted rail operations, with several trains halted at various stations. Relief trains have been dispatched from New Jalpaiguri to the accident site.
