Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly's wife and their daughter joined junior resident doctors protesting in Kolkata over the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dona Ganguly along with her daughter Sana expressed solidarity with the protesters and demanded justice for the victim.
Ganguly’s social media solidarity
Ganguly recently changed his profile picture on social media platform X to black as a sign of mourning. Thousands have followed suit in expressing sorrow over the incident. Ganguly faced criticism for earlier comments describing the crime as a "one-off" incident but later clarified his remarks, condemning the crime and calling for severe punishment for the perpetrator.
Supreme Court intervention
The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, has taken up the case suo motu, criticising the West Bengal government's response and delay in filing the FIR. The court has also formed a task force to recommend safety measures for on-duty doctors and asked the CBI to file a status report on the case. The court emphasised that this crime was the "last straw" and urged for swift action to ensure the safety of medical professionals.
CBI may conduct polygraph test on ex-Principal of Kolkata Hospital
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is considering conducting a polygraph test on Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor earlier this month. Ghosh, who resigned two days after the doctor's body was found in a seminar hall on August 9, has been questioned multiple times by the CBI.
An official stated, "We want to further verify Ghosh's answers, as there have been discrepancies in some of his replies. Therefore, we are mulling over the option to conduct a polygraph test on him." Ghosh was grilled by investigators on Tuesday, focusing on his actions after learning of the doctor's death, his subsequent contacts, and the reason for allegedly delaying the parents' access to the body for nearly three hours.
Additionally, Ghosh has been questioned regarding the authorization of renovations in rooms adjacent to the seminar hall where the body was discovered. The CBI had previously received court permission to conduct a polygraph test on Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer arrested in connection with the case. The investigation into the rape-murder case was handed over to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court, taking it from the Kolkata Police.
