A special CBI court has ordered judicial custody for Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, along with co-accused Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali, until September 23. The accused were arrested in connection with financial irregularities at the state-run hospital, which surfaced following the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor on August 9.
Allegations of financial mismanagement
According to CBI findings, Ghosh allegedly maintained a "criminal nexus" with two vendors, granting them contracts at RG Kar Medical College due to their prior association during his tenure at Murshidabad Medical College. The investigation revealed that these vendors were given preferential treatment, leading to significant financial loss to the government.
ED investigation and raids
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also investigating the former principal. The ED has conducted searches at 11 locations, including Ghosh's Beliaghata residence, his farmhouse in Canning, and the homes of relatives and associates, as part of the financial probe. Prasun Chatterjee, an aide of Ghosh and a data entry operator at Chittaranjan National Medical College, has also been detained.
Supreme Court dismisses Ghosh's petition
Sandip Ghosh’s petition to intervene in a Calcutta High Court-ordered CBI probe into a biomedical waste disposal scam at RG Kar Medical College was dismissed by the Supreme Court. The investigation also aims to explore any possible links between the financial scam and the tragic rape and murder of the doctor.
