Uttar Pradesh urban local body polls: India's border with Nepal will remain sealed today, 48 hours before the urban local body polls in the state to prevent anti-social elements from crossing the boundary.

Uttar Pradesh urban local body polls: In order to prevent anti-social elements from crossing the boundary and vitiating the election atmosphere, India's border with Nepal will be sealed today. The border will be sealed 48 hours before the urban local body polls. As per the latest updates, the movement at transit points will be stopped from Tuesday evening till Thursday evening. 

The Uttar Pradesh urban local body elections will be held in two phases- on Thursday (May 4) and May 11. As per the schedule, the counting of votes will be conducted on May 13.  Maharajganj will go to the polls during the first phase of elections on Thursday.

Sashastra Seema Bal will enforce the sealing

District Electoral Officer Satendra Kumar in an interaction with the reporters informed that the "Sashastra Seema Bal will enforce the sealing. Only emergency vehicles will be allowed across during this period." Both countries took the decision to seal the borders in a recent meeting. 

Kumar further informed that the security personnel are painting round-the-clock vigil and the traffic movement has been banned. Paramilitary, civil police and intelligence personnel are also keeping a close watch on activities along the border, the official said.

Only emergency services will be allowed to move

The Indo-Nepal border will be sealed 48 hours before the polling on May 4. As per the District Election Officer/District Magistrate of Bahraich Dinesh Chandra Singh, only emergency services like ambulances and vehicles carrying essential commodities will be allowed to move following a comprehensive check.
