A man and his wife were beaten to death with iron rods and sticks by their neighbours in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur on Friday. The police have arrested three people in connection with the murder, which they say was allegedly motivated by an affair between the victim's son and the daughter of one of the accused. The couple, Abbas and Kamrul Nisha, were attacked by a group of men armed with iron rods and sticks while they were sleeping in their home. They died on the spot.
The police said that the attack was planned by some members of the accused family, who were angry that Abbas's son had eloped with their daughter a few years ago. The son was later released from jail, but the family apparently continued to harbor resentment against him.
The accused have been identified as Shaukat Rampal, his brother Irfan Rampal, and their cousin Irshad Rampal. The police are still searching for two other suspects.
The incident has sparked outrage in the area, with locals demanding that the accused be brought to justice. The police have assured us that they will do everything possible to ensure that the perpetrators are punished.
The case highlights the growing problem of honour killings in India. According to a report by the National Crime Records Bureau, 2,539 honour killings were reported in India in 2020. This is a significant increase from the 2,305 cases reported in 2019.
The government has taken some steps to address the problem of honour killings, but more needs to be done. The police need to be more vigilant in investigating these cases, and the courts need to hand down stiff sentences to the perpetrators.
