In a shocking incident, four people died after their CNG car caught fire in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. They were burnt alive in the Jani Police station area at around 9 pm, said police on Sunday.
"Four people travelling in a car from Delhi were burnt alive in Jani Police station at around 9 pm," said Superintendent of Police (Rural) Kamlesh Bahadur.
"The car had a CNG kit fitted in it. The cause of the fire is still not clear. Efforts are being made to identify the deceased and to reach out to their families," said the officer.
Hours after the incident, the police said they have identified the four people, including three women, who were killed when their CNG car caught fire a day earlier.
Senior Superintendent of Police Rohit Singh Sajwan said those who died in the episode included Lalit (20), his mother Rajni (40), Radha (29) and Kavita (50).
The victims were going to Haridwar from Ghaziabad, Sajwan said.
Prima facie it appeared that the car caught fire due to CNG malfunction. A detailed probe is on in the matter, he added.
