Watch video: CCTV footage shows lightning strike in Indirapuram, kills one girl and injures five others

A 14-year-old girl was killed and five other people sustained burn injuries in a lightning strike in the Indirapuram area in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad on Friday. One woman's condition is reported to be critical. The accident happened at around 9 am in Makanpur village of Indirapuram police station area. 

They were waiting under a peepal tree for the rain to stop when the incident occurred. The CCTV footage of the incident has emerged. Women and children were from the slum area behind the Hanuman temple and were engaged in sweeping and cleaning work. This morning they left their homes to go to work when the incident happened.

Lightning struck directly on the girl's head

Due to the heavy rain, they sought shelter under a peepal tree near the Hanuman temple. It was during this time that lightning struck, and six people, including a girl and a young woman, were affected. 

As per the reports, the lightning struck directly on the girl's head, causing her hair and the rest of her body to burn. Additionally, Jasmine, Ajmeri Khatoon, Shalau, Shabana, and Nandini were also injured. They have been admitted to a government hospital in Ghaziabad. Shalau is said to be in critical condition. All of them are originally from the Purnia and Madhepura districts of Bihar.

Incident caught on camera

The incident of lightning striking the house has been captured on a CCTV camera installed in the building. The CCTV footage clearly shows how a powerful explosion and flash of light occurred when the lightning struck.

The priest of the Hanuman temple, who witnessed the incident, explained that there was heavy rainfall at that time. Suddenly, there was a loud explosion. Some women were standing under the peepal tree. Upon hearing cries and screams, we rushed outside. Unfortunately, one child had already died on the spot. We carried the injured to the hospital. Due to the rain, these women had taken shelter under the peepal tree.

After the incident, the police and administration team also arrived at the scene. The Tehsildar (revenue officer) said that all possible government assistance is being provided to the deceased and the injured in this matter.

Rain, gusty winds lash parts of NCR

Rain with gusty winds lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) today (September 15) morning. Waterlogging was also witnessed in several parts of the national capital and its neighbouring areas.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), such spells of light rain accompanied by gusty winds will gradually decrease after 9.30 am on Friday. In a weather bulletin at 7.29 am on its official handle on X, the IMD posted, "Delhi-NCR most likely to experience gusty wind of speed 50-70 kmph and moderate rain with few occasional intense spell due to approaching clouds from NW Uttar Pradesh till around 09:30 of today thereafter gusty wind and rain spell will decrease gradually. Be updated and stay safe".
