A 40-year-old traffic police sub-inspector fainted while on duty due to the extreme heat and passed away on Sunday, according to police.
According to Circle Officer (Traffic) Pramod Yadav, Vinod Sonkar was on duty near the Hanumangarhi temple in Ayodhya on Sunday afternoon.
He stated that the intense heat caused Sonkar to faint and that he was rushed to the district hospital, where he passed away.
According to Yadav, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Ayodhya, Dr. Ajay Raja, the post-mortem report is awaiting. "Unfortunately, one of our traffic sub-inspectors fell prey to the heat wave and worst weather."
"As of now, we have received only one or two cases of heat strokes, and those too are mild ones," the CMO stated when asked if heat stroke was the cause of death.
Odisha confirms first heat wave-related death
According to a high-ranking official, the state government of Odisha confirmed the first heat wave-related death and approved an ex-gratia payment of Rs 50,000 for the deceased person's family.
“So far, we have received information on 20 alleged heat wave fatalities. One death has been confirmed so far from Balasore district. The others are being inquired by the collectors,” the official said, adding Rs 50,000 will be paid to bereaved families in case of death due to heat waves.
SRC Satyabrata Sahoo reviewed the situation on Saturday in light of the IMD forecast and the prevailing heat wave conditions in various districts.
According to the Met Office's forecast, hot weather is likely to persist for three days in some districts.
