Gold biscuits weighing around 13 kilograms worth Rs 8 crore have been seized by the authorities. Two people were arrested while one was able to escape. All three smugglers were using a four-wheeler to smuggle gold and tried to escape when they found out that the cops were chasing them.
Bhadohi SP Meenakshi Katyayan informed that they received information that three persons were carrying a huge quantity of smuggled gold biscuits in a car. As soon as the information was received, they put up check up posts at various places.
As the cops noticed the three smugglers and tried to chase them, the occupants tried to escape.
The crime branch, however, arrested two accused who have been identified as Rahul and Deepak and are residents of Maharashtra.
There has been a 47 percent increase in gold smuggling in the country. It is noteworthy that according to a report in March this year, 3,502 kg of smuggled gold was seized in the country last year, which is 47 percent more than in the year 2021.
According to a government data, various agencies had seized 2,383.38 kg of gold in 2021. At the same time, in 2020, 2,154.58 kg of smuggled gold was seized. It was reported in the data that 916.37 kg of gold has been seized in the first two months of the 2023.
