WhatsApp, an instant messaging platform is testing a new In-App Dialer feature that claims to simplify the way users have been making calls from the platform. This enhancement is a part of WhatsApp beta’s latest update, for Android version 2.24.13.17 and is available to the selected beta testers initially.

Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming feature and how it could enhance the calling experience on the platfrom.

What are the challenges faced by the callers on WhatsApp?

Since its inception, WhatsApp has been a go-to platform for making voice/video calls along with messaging to people across the world- offering a convenient way for the users to connect.

However, making calls to unsaved contacts has been a little troublesome, as users have to save the contact in their address book or start a chat to place a call. The new in-app dialer will aim at addressing this issue, by streamlining the process of calling unsaved numbers.

In-App Dialer: How does it work?

The new dialer feature, which was spotted by WABetaInfo was introduced by the floating action button which will be available within the calls tab of WhatsApp. With the incorporation of the new button in the app, users could directly enter the phone numbers to make calls and would bypass the need to save the contact first.

This feature has been specifically designed to make quick calls to new numbers or for temporary contacts- which you do not want to store (contact) in your phonebook.

In-App Dialer: What are the key highlighting features which make it more engaging for the users? Key features

  1. Direct calling without saving contacts- Users can dial any phone number directly from WhatsApp itself and this reduces the step where you need to save the number before making a call.
  2.    Messaging Shortcuts- The dialer screen will now have a shortcut to send messages to the number which is entered on the app, which will provide flexibility if you decide to text instead of calling anyone.
  3. WhatsApp registration notification- The dialer will notify the users if the entered number is registered on WhatsApp or not. This will enable the users to know whether they can use the contact number instantly or not.

Benefits of the new ‘In-App Dialer’

The introduction of the new in-app dialer feature is a significant enhancement that the users are experiencing by making voice calls more accessible and efficient. This feature uses internet data to make calls, which means the user does not have to pay or recharge their number- especially when we speak of international calls, and makes the most of their Wi-Fi or data plans.

This feature is beneficial for frequent travellers and those who are looking to reduce their calling expenses.

Availability and future rollout

At present, the in-app dialer feature is available to limited beta testers- using the latest version of WhatsApp beta for Android (only).

The instant messaging platform further plans to expand the feature to more users in the coming days, and collect the feedback to make improvements to the platforms- based on user experiences.

Keep an eye on your WhatsApp updates to see when you will get access to this handy new feature.
