South Korea welcomes Instagram as third most used mobile app

Instagram, reportedly surpassed Naver, South Korea's top internet portal, and became the third most popular mobile application in terms of usage time.

Instagram, a photo and video-sharing social media platform overtook Naver, South Korea's leading internet portal, as the third most popular mobile application there in terms of usage time last month (April 2024), industry data showcased.

South Koreans spent a combined 20.9 billion minutes on Instagram in April 2024, as per the data by mobile market research firm WiseappㆍRetailㆍGoods.

It marked the first time Instagram outstripped Naver to become the third most used smartphone app here since Wiseapp began compiling such data in March 2016. People have been collectively spending 20 billion minutes on Naver in April this year- Yonhap news agency reported.

YouTube, the global video streaming platform was the longest video streaming application which was used last month at 102.1 billion minutes was noted by the platform, followed by KakaoTalk, South Korea's top mobile messenger, at 32.5 billion minutes.

Following Instagram and Naver, a short-form video hosting service named Tiktok was ranked No. 5 with a usage time of 6 billion minutes, Naver Webtoon ranked No. 6 with 4.9 billion minutes, and X, formerly Twitter, came in at No. 7 with 4.8 billion minutes.

Wiseapp said that South Koreans are spending more time on social media, noting the usage time of Instagram increased by more than 5 billion minutes over the past year.

Meta, the company that owns Instagram recently enhanced its AI tool by adding ‘Meta AI’. The new tool has been specifically designed for advertisers to help them create more creative advertisements on these platforms. By using the new AI tools, the platform users will be able to generate photos and videos which could be used for advertising purposes. These AI tools could work on Llama, an advanced large language model.

Instagram has been reportedly working on some noticeable upgrades and changes. The report said that it is set to bring big changes to its Feed section which has confirmed the change and stated that some changes have been made to the content which will be visible in the feed section.

Instagram also faced a lawsuit following the circulation of a controversial video featuring a mother and son participating in the Kiss Challenge. The case was filed under the ‘Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Information Technology (IT) Act, which has prompted an investigation by authorities in South Dinajpur (West Bengal).
