Meta removes 17 million bad posts from Indian accounts of Facebook and Instagram

Meta has deleted around 11.6 million posts from Facebook and 5.4 million from Instagram. The accounts which were removed were from India and due to safety protocol, the company took this step.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has taken specific action against inappropriate content in India. As per the compliance report that surfaced in April 2024, Meta removed millions of posts for violating community standards. As per the report, the company deleted around 11.6 million posts from Facebook and 5.4 million from Instagram.

Significant content removal: The main reason

Facebook content: Removed 11.6 million posts 

In April 2024, Meta’s compliance report highlighted the removal of 11.6 million posts from Facebook because due to policy violations. 

These posts were flagged for containing inappropriate content which will not adhere to the community standards of the company. 

Instagram content: Removed around 5.4 million posts 

Like Facebook, Meta further removed 5.4 million posts from Instagram. The company has emphasised its commitment towards maintaining a safe and respectful environment on its platforms, which will enforce strict policies against content which will breach its guidelines.

How does Meta handle complaints?

Facebook complaints:

In April, Meta reportedly received 17,124 complaints on the social media platform via the Indian Grievance Mechanism. Out of all the complaints, around 9,977 cases were resolved. Users have access to pre-established channels for reporting the violations and downloading their account data, providing a clear process for addressing concerns.

Meta further received 7,147 complaints on Facebook for specialized review and action was taken on 4,303 complaints. While the remaining 2,844 were reviewed but deemed non-actionable.

Instagram complaints:

Meta also reported receiving around 12,924 complaints on Instagram, which were registered in April 2024. Out of those, Meta resolved 5,941 complaints on Instagram. For specialized review, 6,983 complaints were received, out of which 3,206 actions were taken. 

The remaining complaints were reviewed, but no actions were taken.

Compliance with IT Rules 2021

Meta has monthly report is part of the compliance requirement under the IT Rules 2021, which mandates that social media platforms with over 50,000 users issue a report detailing their actions against policy violations. The company has reinforced its commitment to maintaining the integrity of its platforms and ensuring user safety by adhering to these regulations.

Meta's commitment to standards

Meta has said that any content (photos, videos, posts, reels) which fails to meet these standards is subjected to pulling it off the platform.
