Google I/O 2024: Everything announced at the event

Google held its I/O developer conference on May 14 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. The keynote was delivered by the company's CEO Sundar Pichai. The event mainly focused on Gemini AI.

Google hosted its I/O 2024 conference today at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, delivered the keynote speech. The event primarily focused on Gemini AI. At the beginning of the event, the CEO demonstrated the capabilities of Gemini AI in various Google products. Later, Pichai presented various new Gemini AI-powered features such as Search Overview and Ask Photos, which are now being introduced to Google Search and Google Photos, respectively.  

New Gemini features

The CEO has announced that the company is launching the improved Gemini 1.5 Pro today at Workspace Labs and will expanded the Gemini Advanced to 2 million tokens later this year. The tech giant has also introduced the new Gemini 1.5 Flash, which is a lighter-weight model optimized for low-latency tasks. Additionally, they have introduced Project Astra, an AI agent that can understand context and take actions. It is designed to process information faster and respond quickly. The company showcased a video where Gemini can answer questions by processing real-time images.

Generative media

Google also showcased the power of Gemini AI in media and presented examples of generative AI-generated photos, music, and video. They demonstrated how users can generate media by providing prompts as input. Some of these features will be available to selected creators, and the waiting list is now open in Google Labs.

Trillium 

Pichai later introduced Trillium at the event, which is a sixth-generation TPU. It offers 4.7 times improved performance and will be available to cloud customers in late 2024.

Google Search

Expanding on the AI overview in Google Search, the company’s representative showcased various examples of how it can help users. The feature is now rolling out in the US today and will be available in more countries soon. It has also added a new video search feature to its search engine, allowing users to ask questions to Google Search via video.

Gemini in Google apps

Google has announced that the Gemini AI side panel will be generally available to users next month. In addition, three new features have been introduced to Gmail. The first feature will summarize emails, while the other features can compare various emails for information based on the prompt. Google also showcased how Gemini AI can integrate data from various Google products.

Chips AI

Google has introduced Chips AI, a teammate capable of reading and responding to messages in chats based on user prompts.

Google Live

Google Live will allow users to have a conversation with Gemini AI. the feature will be introduced later this year. 

AI in Android

Google is integrating AI-powered search into smartphones. The company is also making Gemini AI the default assistant and adding new capabilities to "Circle to Search." Gemini is becoming "context aware," meaning it can sense what users are doing on their phones and anticipate their needs. Additionally, the company is rolling out Gemini AI Nano features in Talkback to improve accessibility.
