AMD reportedly unveiled its latest advancements in CPU and GPU technology at the Computex 2024 event which took place in Taipei (Taiwan). The company has introduced the next-generation Zen 5 CPU architecture along with XDNA 2 GPU NPU architecture. These innovations power all-new AMD Ryzen 9000 series processors which are specifically designed for gaming PCs and the third-generation Ryzen AI processors for the ultrabooks.

AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series: About

AMD has come up with its third-generation Ryzen AI 300 series processors which is specifically designed for AI PC applications. These processors come with a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) which is capable of up to 50 trillion operations per second (TOPs). This high level of performance will enable advanced on-device AI experiences such as recall (Copilot+), live captioning, real-time translation and co-creation.

Technical specifications

The Ryzen AI 300 series includes:

  • New XDNA 2 NPU
  • 12-core CPU
  • GPU based on the RDNA 3.5 architecture, with up to 16 compute units on the flagship AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370

The Ryzen AI 9 365 offers similar AI capabilities, but:

  • 10 CPU cores (which is less than the AI 300 series)
  • Supporting upcoming Copilot+ PCs which requires a minimum AI performance of 40 TOPs.

Comparison

When compared to competitors like Intel Lunar Lake AI processors, Qualcomm X Elite and Apple M4, the latest Ryzen AI processors boast more AI processors capable with up to 50 TOPs and utilizes 16-bit instruction without requiring quantization.

Availability

Laptops which are powered by the Ryzen AI 300 series processors are said to hit the market starting July 2024. Over 100 platform partners, which includes MSI, will offer Copilot+ PCs and AI+ PCs which are equipped with these processors.

AMD Ryzen 9000 Series Desktop Processors

The new Ryzen 9000 series desktop processors, on the other hand are built on the AM5 platform, that supports advanced technologies like PCIe 5.0 and DDR5. These processors offer up to a 16 per cent improvement in instructions per clock (IPC) compared to the previous Zen 4 processors.

Flagship model: Ryzen 9 9950X

The lineup's flagship model, the Ryzen 9 9950X, comes with 16 cores and 32 threads, with clock speeds reaching up to 5.7 GHz, all within a thermal design power (TDP) of 170W.
When compared to the Intel Core i9-14900K, the Ryzen 9 9950X provides higher graphics bandwidth and AI acceleration, that delivers up to 56 per cent better performance in benchmarks like Blender and up to 23 per cent higher frame rates during gaming.

Additional models

The Ryzen 9000 series also includes:

  • Ryzen 9 9900X
  • Ryzen 9700X
  • Ryzen 9600X

All these processors will be made available in the market from July 2024 onwards.
