Apple recently held its World Wide Developer Conference 2024 (WWDC). During the keynote of the event, Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence, which is a new suite of AI features. These features will be coming to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year. Here are all the details you should know about Apple Intelligence including features it will bring and supported devices.
Apple has introduced a new set of AI-based language tools with various functions:
- Writing Tools: AI can rewrite and proofread your text in any app, which is convenient for composing emails, articles, or social media posts.
- Priority notifications: AI can prioritize important notifications based on context and bring them to the top of the list.
- Priority messages in Mail: AI will prioritize email messages that require your attention.
- Smart Reply: AI can suggest email replies for your approval before sending them.
- Reduce Interruptions: The new Focus mode functions like Do Not Disturb but allows important notifications to come through intelligently.
- Content Summaries: AI can summarize content from meetings or emails for your convenience.
Another set of AI tools are Image Tools that can perform the following functions:
- Image Creation: Generate original images with a simple typed request, even ones that feature a loved one.
- Genmoji: Create unique emojis on demand for any occasion.
- Clean Up: Easily remove unwanted objects from a photo.
- Powerful Search: Quickly find specific photos in the Photos app.
- Image Wand: Use the Apple Pencil to draw a circle in a Note and the AI will automatically create a new image based on the other note contents.
- Create Memories Movies: Type a request in the Photos app to have a new Memories video created using the best-matching images in your library.
Apple has enhanced Siri with AI to make it more user-friendly and versatile. The improvements include:
- Improved language understanding: Siri is now more forgiving of awkward requests and can handle complex commands like changing a task midway.
- Personalized assistance: Siri is now more context-aware and can perform actions based on your personal interactions. For example, it can play a specific song your spouse sent you.
- Onscreen awareness: Siri can now recognize what's on your screen and assist accordingly. For instance, it can add an address to a contact card.
- Cross-app actions: Siri can now perform tasks across different apps, helping to save time and streamline processes. For example, it can add a location to your Road Trip note.
- Redesigned appearance: Siri now appears with a glowing light that animates around the edges of your device when activated.
- Typing requests: You can now type requests to Siri with a quick double tap at the bottom of your iPhone or iPad's screen, instead of speaking them.
- Enhanced Apple product knowledge: Siri now has deeper knowledge about Apple devices and OS features and can provide relevant information upon inquiry.
Which devices will support Apple Intelligence?
Apple Intelligence is limited to specific modern devices, including the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPads with M1, M2, or M4 chips, and Macs with M1, M2, or M3 chips. This means that currently, only the latest and highest-end iPhones will support these powerful AI features. The upcoming iPhone 16, 16 Plus, and 16 Pro models are expected to support Apple Intelligence as well.
