Facebook is all set to challenge popular dating app Tinder by introducing a new dating feature on its main app. The company's CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced it at the company’s annual F8 developer conference. The dating feature will have a separate inbox apart from Messenger and Whatsapp and will help people build a meaningful relationship. However, it will not match people who are friends on Facebook.
A user's dating profile will remain hidden from their Facebook friends and will have only first name of the user. Facebook will suggest potential matches based on common interests, preferences, mutual friends, etc. A user can also find matches through groups and events. For this, the user has to unlock an event after which he/she will be able to see people who are going to the event and have activated the dating profile feature.
Zuckerberg emphasised that the dating feature will help 200 million users who have listed themselves as 'single'. However, it will be available to all users irrespective of their relationship status.
The dating feature will allow users to send text messages through the dating inbox but it will not support any video, link or GIFs. This has been done as a part of Facebook's security feature.
Considering the popularity of Facebook, its dating feature is being seen as a threat to other platforms like Bumble, Tinder, etc. Those excited about this have to wait a bit as Facebook will begin testing the feature later this year.
