Samsung has unveiled the worlds first foldable screen smartphone called the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The device was launched at the Samsung Galaxy unpacked event that took place in the US, followed with other phones launched at the event like the Samsung Galaxy S10, S10+ and S10e, along with the Galaxy S10 5G.
Galaxy Fold outdoes the iPhone XS, but will you still buy one?
The Galaxy Fold is a sci-fi magic that has opened doors for the world by taking technology to a whole new level, thanks to its new design and concept. Notably, with this Samsung leaves Apple's iPhone franchise in the dust, since Apple hasn't done anything notably major in terms of a facelift
in its devices.
Although the Galaxy Fold looks impressive but given the new technology, being an early adopter could have it's precarious. The whole credit undoubtedly goes to Samsung for launching the foldable phone in the market before its rivals but given the adoption of new technology amongst average consumer, there still is a scope of more development that could have been done with the product.
Never the less, Samsung lovers and gadget enthusiasts will undoubtedly line up to own the device first.
Samsung Galaxy Fold Price and Release date
In case you think that the Apple iPhone XS Max is expensive at $1,099, well Samsung just outdid Apple with the Galaxy Fold that is priced at a staggering $1,980, but given the tech around the product, we really can't complain about the pricing here, or can we?
Thankfully, Samsung launched other devices next to the Galaxy Fold that saw the likes of Galaxy S10 that is priced at $899 and the bigger Galaxy S10 Plus $999. Well, at a time when smartphones prices have skyrocketed, we can say that the Galaxy Fold breaks new grounds bearing the potential of it eating up your pocket.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold will go on sale in the US on April 26, followed with Europe on 3rd May. The Samsung Galaxy Fold price will start at $1,980 and will cost €2,000 in Europe. Although the India price is not mentioned and nothing is known about its launch here, given the straight dollar-to-rupee conversion the Samsung Galaxy Fold price in India is at about Rs 1,40,886.90 approx.
There will be a more expensive 5G edition of the device that will come a little later, but no price for the same has been confirmed yet.
Samsung Galaxy Fold Design
Well, given the prototype that was showcased at the Samsung's Developer Conference in November, the Galaxy Fold design looked a lot better when launched at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event. The Galaxy Fold will be available in four colour options of Cosmos Black, Space Silver, Martian Green and Astro Blue.
Samsung Galaxy Fold display
The Samsung Galaxy Fold comes with two OLED displays, from which one can actually fold. The front display sports a 4.5-inch screen, while opening the device reveals a second display making it twice the size, provided with a notch on the top for the cameras.
The inner foldable 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display unfolds like a page, offering a bigger screen that will offer users better experience to play games, watch movies and running other apps. One can run up to three applications side-by-side thanks to the new feature called the 'multi active window'.
Using apps on the 4.6-inch cover display will work as is on the larger display when unfolded without a hassle.
Samsung Galaxy Fold software
In case you are wondering how to adapt swapping between the Cover Display and the flexible display of the Galaxy Fold, well Samsung here has overhauled its mobile OS replacing the old TouchWiz with the new One UI.
One UI on the Samsung Galaxy Fold will allow users to run three apps simultaneously when in tablet mode. With this Google too has confirmed plans to add support for foldable displays in the Android operating system.
Samsung Galaxy Fold camera
In terms of camera, the Galaxy Fold gets a triple-camera system on the back, with two inside, place right above the 7.3-inch AMOLED display and a single selfie camera on the front, making the device a host to six cameras.
The device allows users to use other apps during a video call, which explains the thinking behind installing the camera on top of the inner flexible display of the device.
Let's take a look at the Samsung Galaxy Fold camera specs in detail-
The Cover camera of the Galaxy Fold includes a 10MP Selfie Camera with F2.2 aperture, while on the back are the triple rear camera sensors that include a 16MP Ultra Wide Camera with F2.2, a 12MP Wide-angle Camera Dual Pixel AF, OIS, F1.5/F2.4 and a 12MP Telephoto Camera, PDAF, OIS, F2.4, 2X optical zoom.
Towards the front in the flexible display are the two 10MP Selfie Cameras with F2.2 aperture and an 8MP RGB Depth Camera with F1.9 aperture.
Samsung Galaxy Fold specifications and features
Initially, when Samsung had showcased the Galaxy Fold at the Unpacked event, it confirmed some of the specifications of the device that were not known before. To begin with, the Samsung Galaxy Fold will come in both 4G and 5G versions.
For specs, the Samsung Galaxy Fold will feature a 7nm 64-bit Octa-core processor, backed with 12GB RAM and 512GB internal storage, but sadly there is no MicroSD slot for extra storage.
With a device of this magnitude, Samsung has embedded two batteries that are a split on either side of the hinge, which add up to 4,380mAh.
And in case you are a traveller, well the Galaxy Fold is all sorted here as well,
since the device is capable of charging itself and a second device simultaneously via Wireless PowerShare, while connected to a regular charger.
Unlike the Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10+, there is no in-screen fingerprint reader here. Samsung has added the fingerprint scanner on the side of the device.
Conclusion
All in all, the Samsung Galaxy Fold is nothing short of a technology pioneer that has helped in moving to a different direction with smartphones. But for all the early adopters who are willing to venture in the new world of foldable phones that will evolve with time to become a more polished product, I say go for it!
