Qualcomm has unveiled the new Snapdragon 855 processor. This will be the new generation, mobile phone processor that will run all 5G smartphones in the US next year. The chip was launched at an event in Hawaii and the key feature of the chip is the 5G Snapdragon X50 modem for phones that aids in connecting to 5G wireless data networks with "multi-gigabit" mobile data speeds of up to 50 or 100 times faster than the 4G network.

The new Snapdragon 855 SoC would feature the company's fourth generation, multi-core Qualcomm AI Engine that comes with three times the AI performance, compared to the previous one. The company also said that the chip would feature in the world's first Computer Vision (CV) ISP to help phones recognise objects and faces, and also power the new video capture features.
The company also added that the new Snapdragon 855 chip would support the new Qualcomm ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that is called the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor. This sensor can read users fingerprint sensor through the glass screen of the device.
"This is the only mobile solution that can accurately detect fingerprints through numerous contaminants. Furthermore, this technology enables sleek, cutting-edge form factors while distinguishing itself from alternatives with higher levels of security and accuracy," it said in its blog post.
The new 5G-ready Snapdragon 855 chip is built on the 7nm design, which makes it more powerful and efficient than the previous one. Huawei's Kirin 980 and Apple's Bionic chip too are built on the 7nm footprint.
With the new Snapdragon 855 chip, one can expect great mobile photography on the new generation flagship smartphones.
