American chipmaker Qualcomm on Monday unveiled the latest iteration of its fast charging technology - Quick Charge 5, the world's first 100W+ fast charging solution for smartphones which promises to charge the device from 0-50 per cent in five minutes.
"Quick Charge 5, our fastest and most versatile charging solution, will enable consumers to enjoy their devices for longer periods of time, without worrying about the time required to recharge. We are proud to expand our technology portfolio and make accessible 100W+ charging a commercial reality," Ev Roach, VP Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, said in a statement.
Quick Charge 5 relies on two new power management integrated circuits - SMB 1396 and SMB1398. Both support single- and dual-cell batteries and can handle voltage in excess of 20V for wired and wireless power sources.
Apart from promising fast charging speeds, the company says Quick Charge 5 uses Qualcomm Battery Save and a new Qualcomm Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities technology to increase power efficiency and battery life on the supported device.
To increase power transfer efficiency, battery life and safety, Qualcomm has enabled Dual/Triple Charge technology, adaptive input voltage, INOV4 (Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage) and it is said to be 10-degree Celcius cooler than Quick Charge 4.A
Quick Charge 5 is expected to appear in commercial devices in Q3 2020. For now, it is supported on Snapdragon 865, 865 Plus, and all the upcoming premium-tier Snapdragon mobile chipsets. Xiaomi has been confirmed as the first company to launch smartphones with Quick Charge 5 in the future.
"Xiaomi has always been committed to proactively driving the adoption of new technologies and accelerating the fulfillment of enhanced experiences. In the future, more Xiaomi users will be able to enjoy high-speed, safe and superior charging experiences enabled by Quick Charge 5," Zhang Lei, Mi Phone vice president and hardware R&D general manager at Xiaomi, added.
