LG on Monday unveiled its two new smartphones under the V and G series. The LG V50 ThinQ 5G is the first 5G-enabled smartphone from the company that comes with a dual screen, while the LG G8 ThinQ is the world's first smartphone that comes with advanced palm vein authentication or Hand ID.
Both the phones were unveiled at MWC 2019 on Sunday in Barcelona.
According to the company, the LG V50 ThinQ 5G comes with a dual screen design that resembles a cover case which opens up to give owners a 6.2-inch OLED display that offers double viewing for gaming and multitasking. The dual screen display on the device can be used independently as well.
It comes with a 6.4-inch QHD+ OLED full vision display, "video depth control" in the front and rear cameras ensuring focus on moving subjects. The phones comes powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset and runs on Android 9.0 Pie. It gets a triple rear camera set-up at the back and houses a 4,000 mAh battery along with Snapdragon X50 5G modem to deliver the advanced processing power required for 5G.
In preparation of the rollout of its first 5G phone, LG is partnering with 10 major carriers in markets where 5G service is scheduled be launched this year, including the US, South Korea and Australia.
The LG G8 ThinQ comes with a palm vein authentication lock system that recognises the shape, thickness and other individual characteristics of the veins in their palms.
According to LG, this has been possible by the combination of the Z Camera technology and infrared sensors, which makes it more secure than fingerprint recognition technology. To unlock the LG G8 ThinQ, all one needs to do is place a pre-registered hand in front of the front-facing camera for a split second.
