Valencia, Spain: Top-seeded David Ferrer eased into the second round of the Valencia Open by beating Gael Monfils of France 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday.
Monfils looked to be in pain during the second set but continued playing. Ferrer said he could see Monfils was struggling but that he "tried to concentrate on my game because often when you see that someone has a physical problem you stop hitting so hard."
Philipp Kohlschreiber provided an upset by beating second-seeded fellow German Tommy Haas 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Fourth-seeded John Isner of the United States defeated Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2).
Fabio Fognini also advanced by beating local player Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-2, while Jeremy Chardy beat Florian Mayer 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 and Jarkko Nieminen eased past Benoir Paire 6-3, 6-3.
Jeremy Chardy of France came from a set down to beat Florian Mayer of Germany, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a late match.
