Harrison, New Jersey, Sept 24: New York Red Bulls defender Rafael Marquez has been suspended by coach Hans Backe and will miss Saturday night's Major League Soccer game against Portland.
The Mexico international was critical of his teammates after Wednesday's 3-1 loss to Real Salt Lake at home.
Marquez, one of the highest-paid players in MLS, has not scored a goal this season for the struggling Red Bulls, who have won just seven games and currently sit in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Marquez joined the Red Bulls last summer with former France striker Thierry Henry after both players left Barcelona. AP
