Athens, Greece, Sept 16: The former chairman of Greek club Kavala, implicated in a match fixing scandal, has been arrested after being on the run for three months.

Poilce say key suspect Makis Psomiadis was arrested Thursday at a seaside home south of Athens on suspicion of membership of a criminal organization, blackmail, bribery and match fixing.

Topflight clubs Kavala and Volos were thrown out of Greece's professional leagues this summer over the match-fixing scandal, and subsequently launched an unsuccessful appeal.

Psomiadis, led in handcuffs to Athens police headquarters, described the match-fixing allegations against him as “fairytales” and described himself as a “political prisoner.” AP
