Sao Paulo, Aug 31: FIFA says more than 95,000 people have applied to be volunteers at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, surpassing the numbers from Germany and South Africa in just more than a week.

About 15,000 volunteers will be selected to work in the tournament in Brazil, while about 7,000 will be picked for next year's Confederations Cup.

FIFA said Thursday that most of the candidates are in the 16-25 age group, and that women account for 47 percent of all applicants.

Nearly 40,000 had applied in the first 24 hours after the program was launched on Aug. 21.

FIFA said nearly 50,000 people applied to be volunteers in 2006 and 70,000 in 2010.

Brazil will host the World Cup in 2014 for the first time since 1950.
