Basel, Dec 13: FC Basel has rewarded interim coach Heiko Vogel with a permanent job after the club advanced to the knockout round of the Champions League by eliminating Manchester United.
Vogel's 2½-year contract was announced Monday, the first day of the winter break.
Basel, which leads the Swiss league by seven points, will discover its next Champions League opponent on Friday.
Basel vice president Bernhard Heusler says “we've been convinced by Heiko Vogel from the start.”
The 36-year-old Vogel was assistant to Thorsten Fink, who left in October to coach Bundesliga club Hamburger SV. Two weeks earlier, Basel had drawn 3-3 at Old Trafford.
