Madrid, May 31: Champions League winner Barcelona says team captain Carles Puyol will undergo surgery on June 1 to treat a left-knee injury that has troubled him over recent months.
The club said Monday that Puyol would be operated on in the city's Quiron Clinic to "to resolve trouble he has been having in the left knee."
Puyol, a key member of Spain's World Cup winning squad, was unable to start in Barcelona's 3-1 Champions League final victory Saturday against Manchester United but was brought on as a substitute in the final moments as a token gesture by coach Pep Guardiola.
He will miss Spain's upcoming friendlies against the United States and Venezuela. AP
