India's Badminton star PV Sindhu has crashed out of Singapore Open in the second round losing to her nemesis Carolina Marin in a thrilling encounter. In fact, Sindhu was very close to winning the match and was leading 18-15 in the deciding set only to squander it and go down 20-22 in the final scoreline.
This is the sixth consecutive time that Sindhu has lost to Marin since 2018. She last won against Spanish arch-rival back in the quarter-final of Malaysia Open in 2018. Marin is now dominating the head to head record against Sindhu leading 12-6. The thriller of a game between the two superstars lasted for 68 minutes with the final scoreline reading 13-21, 21-11, 22-20.
Meanwhile, India's Commonwealth Games bronze medallist duo of Treesa and Gayatri kept the tricolour flying with a stunning upset win over world no.2 Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee of the Republic of Korea 21-9, 14-21, 21-15 in 59 minutes. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand are ranked 30th in the world and will now face Olympic bronze medallists Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong of South Korea in the quarter-final on Friday (May 31).
Another Indian, HS Prannoy, has also bowed out of Singapore Open. Ranked 10th in the world rankings, Prannoy lost to Kenta Nishimoto of Japan 21-13, 14-21, 21-15 in the three-game thriller in 1 hour and 18 minutes. This is the fourth time in six matches that Prannoy has lost to the 11th ranked Japanese player.
