Odense (Denmark): Leading male shuttler Parupalli Kashyap created a huge upset in the Denmark Open super Series Premier, defeating local favourite and World No.3 Jan O. Jorgensen to storm into semi-final of the badminton tournament.
Recently-crowned Commonwealth Games champion Kashayp, who won 21-19, 21-15 in 42 minutes at the Odense Sports Park Friday night, was in his elements from the beginning with vintage cross-court smashes and flawless judgement.
Kashyap moved quickly within the court and reached every corner to pressurise the class and quality of Jorgensen, who won the European Championships earlier this year.
Kashayp kept raking points regularly while Jorgensen played well in patches, which didn't help him in the first game, losing 19-21.
In the second game Kashyap opened up gaps from the beginning, taking a 4-1 lead before Jorgensen clawed his way back but the World No.28 Indian again stretched the lead to 11-7.
Jorgensen reduced the deficit to one point at 12-13 but Kashayp again strove hard to gain three points lead at 15-12. The Danish tried to claw his way back but Kashyap rattled points quickly to stall Jorgensen's progress at 15 points.
In the semi-final Saturday, Kashyap will face World No.2 Chen Long, who sailed past France's Brice Leverdez 21-9, 21-7.
