Indian athletes who rebelled against sports administrators in 2013

New Delhi: Indian athletes being at the mercy of administrators is now a thing of past. Gone were the days when corruption and scandals ridden sports bodies will dictate terms but this year saw some young Turks coming out openly against the administrators.The year began with Tennis star Somdev Devvarman leading a revolt against All India Tennis Association, demanding better infrastructure and more professionalism.Devvarman said “There is zero communication, zero professionalism, regardless of what the players have been trying o say. Hopefully someone can bring in some change.”Ace shooter Abhinav Bindra is also one those rebels who dared to take on the sports administrators.“To a certain extent , the IOA has failed the country. A lot needs to be done for Indian sport and with our potential we are nowhere near where we can be,” said Bindra.Olympic medal winner wrestler Sushil Kumar was shocked when sports administrators ignored his revelation that he was offered money to lose he bout in 2010 World Championship.“I told them about the incident even in 2010 but nobody responded”Another wrestler Yogeshwar Dutthad vowed to return his Olympic medal in protest to IOC's plans to remove wrestling as a discipline.“We will return the our medals if that helps keep wrestling in Olympic. We are what we are we are because of the game and it is bigger than individuals.” The beauty queen of Indian badminton Jwala Gutta too took on the badminton Associatio after it tried to ban her for life.. She went to the court and got a decision in her favour.“what they have done to me is totally uncalled for. It is just not me, they have discriminated against a lot of other players too. Since my performances speak for me, I fight it out. I just don't trust the BAI.”
