New Delhi: Formula 1 legend Jackie Stewart has described Fernando Alonso's return to McLaren for 2015 as a "good move" for both the driver and constructor despite their tumultuous relationship in the past.
It is only a matter of time when McLaren announce the return of Alonso, whose debut stint with the Woking squad ended prematurely in 2007.
Honda returns to F1 as McLaren's engine supplier in 2015 and Stewart reckoned that the Japanese auto giant must have played a role in ensuring Alonso's switch.
"First of all Honda must have had an influence in introducing Alonso to McLaren. Obviously they want a top line winner and Alonso certainly is that person. I think that is a good move for McLaren and him," Stewart told PTI.
McLaren are yet decide on Alonso's partner with the team having the option to retain the experienced Jenson Button or the young Kevin Magnussen. Button scored 126 points to finish eighth in a forgettable season for the team, while Magnussen finished 11th on 55 points.
Stewart said Alonso will have a say on choosing his teammate.
"I suspect he will have a say on who the number two driver will be. But that is not unusual for a number one driver. The same was the case when Michael Schumacher was at Ferrari," said the three-time World Champion.
Who would he pick as McLaren's second driver?
"Jenson has been around for a long time and it is not impossible for them to look to the youth for future. On occasions Jenson was very fast this season but this is a team decision so let's see what they decide," said Stewart.
