India, a country of 1.2 billion people, has been on the lower rungs of sports compared to developed countries, as far as Olympics events, FIFA World Cup, grand slam tennis and hockey is concerned. We do not count anywhere in Winter Olympics, nor do we participate.Yet, there is no point in losing hope. Our players have over the years notched up great achievements in different sports. All England Badminton Championship,1980Prakash Padukone became the first Indian to win the cherised All England Badminton Championship crown beating Indonesia's Liem Swie King.Padukone has made India proud many a times he won his first major international title, the men's singles gold medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada. Atlanta Olympics,1996Indian tennis star, Leander Paes won a bronze medal in the men's singles catergory, beat Fernando Meligeni thus become the first Indian to win an individual medal since KD Jadhav won bronze at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics more than four decades earlier.6.Indonesian Open 2009Super Saina became the first Indian to win a BWF Super Series title, the most prominent badminton series of the world by beating Chinese Wang Lin in the final . 7.FIDE World Championship from 2000-2002 India's sharpest brain on the chess board, Vishwanathan Anand held the FIDE World Championship for three years from 2000-2002. He currently is the undisputed champion of the chess world.8.Cricket World Cup 2011MS Dhoni led side brought back the Cricket World Cup back to Indian shores in 2011 defeat neighbours Sri Lanka in the final played in Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium on April 2, 2011.An inspired India regained the coveted World Cup after 28 years as they suppressed Sri Lanka with a six-wicket victory in a nerve-wrecking final to script a glorious new chapter in their cricketing history.
