Eric 'The Eel' Moussambani - Sydney 2000

Eric, from Equatorial Guinea, clocked the slowest time for the 100m freestyle in Olympic history as he laboured home in just shy of two minutes in a heat that included no other swimmers due to disqualifications.

Later nicknamed 'The Eel', at times he looked to be struggling for air but was eventually roared home by the capactiy crowd.

A loser in some people's eyes but, bearing in mind he had only learned to swim the previous January, a hero for others.
