The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has said that the gymnast Dipa Karmakar should be made the brand ambassador of Indian sports for her commendable achievements.
The demand was made by the party MP Prasun Banerjee who was in Agartala today to felicitate Dipa Karmakar and her coach Bishweshwar Nandi.
Prasun Banerjee, himself an Arjuna award winner, also holds the record for representing India in 100 football matches. He was accompanied by TMC vice-president Mukul Roy.
Banerjee also said that he will raise the issue in the next session of the parliament starting November 9.
“Dipa Karmakar is the golden girl of the country who made all Indians proud with her performance in gymnastics. She should be made the brand ambassador of our country for her achievement without any proper infrastructure and with her personal initiative along with her coach. I would raise the issue in the next session of Parliament,” Banerjee said.
23-year-old Dipa missed a bronze medal by a whisker at Rio Olympics 2016 as she finished fourth in the women's vault finals.
