Glasgow: The Indian women's hockey team went down fighting 2-4 to South Korea in their first encounter at the FIH Champions Challenge 1 here.

India sounded the board through Vandana Katariya (12th) and Poonam Rani (69th) but lacked the edge to get past the Koreans here Sunday night.

India took a surprise lead in the 12th minute through Vandana's field goal. But the lead lasted just two minutes as the Koreans found the equaliser through Mihyun Park in the 14th minute.

The Koreans again scored twice in a gap of one minute in the 24th and 25th minute taking the scorecard to 3-1 at the end of the first session.

The Indian team maintained a steady attack in the second half but was unable to stop the opponent to score its fourth goal in the 42nd minute which they converted through the penalty corner.

The Indian women did not give up and in the 69th minute they scored their second goal through Poonam's field goal and lost the match 2-4.

India will now face Scotland in their next Pool A group match here Monday.
