Germany's European Championship campaign got off to a flying start after they routed Scotland 5-1 in the curtain-raiser of the tournament. Midfielder Florian Wirtz rattled Scotland's defence up front as he found the back of the net in the 10th minute.
Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz also joined the party and gave Germany an intimidating 3-0 lead before heading into the first half.
Havertz's goal came via a penalty kick after the Scottish defender Ryan Porteous was shown a red card for attempting a dangerous tackle on Germany's captain Ilkay Gündogan.
The second half also witnessed the continued dominance of Germany as Niclas Füllkrug scored in the 68th minute to deflate Scotland's hopes. After struggling to keep possession, Scotland applied relentless pressure on Germany's defence and that came to fruition in the 87th minute as Antonio Rüdiger scored an own goal.
The hosts scored their fifth goal of the game as Emre Can exploited the loophole in the Scottish defence in extra time.
"Yes, that's exactly the way we wanted to start and, to be honest, we needed a start just like that," Germany captain Ilkay Gündogan told German broadcaster ZDF.
"I had a good feeling before the game already, to be honest, and it came true, thank God. But exactly this atmosphere, the euphoria in the stadium now with our own fans, that's exactly what we need in order to go far."
Germany's coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed delight at such an impressive display and mentioned that the team should look to carry the winning momentum forward.
"The first 20 minutes were very impressive. The first goals were very good," Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said.
"It's very valuable that many players performed well early on. It was only the first step but a very good one and we can build on this one. We're very happy."
