Dunedin, New Zealand: Matt Machan made a pugnacious 56 and Richie Berrington had 50 as Scotland recovered from an early collapse to reach 142, batting first Tuesday in its Cricket World Cup Pool A match against New Zealand.
Trent Boult and Tim Southee had hat trick chances as Scotland lost its top four batsmen inside the first five after New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl.
Boult dismissed opener Calum MacLeod and first drop Hamish Gardiner with consecutive deliveries in the second over. Boult's first ball was a wide but he quickly hit his line, removing MacLeod, then Gardiner with his second and third deliveries, leaving Scotland two down before a run had come from the bat.
Southee then removed Kyle Coetzer for 1, caught by Grant Elliott at mid-wicket, and captain Preston Mommsen trapped lbw, with the first and second balls of the fifth over as Scotland stumbled further to 12-3 and 12-4. Mommsen challenged his dismissal under the Decision Review System but the television umpire upheld the on-field umpire's original decision of out.
Southee finished with 2-11 from his opening spell of five overs, three of which were maidens, while Boult took 2-21 from six overs in his first spell.
Machan, the 24-year-old England-born Sussex batsman, stood against the early carnage and even struck a few healthy blows for the batting side, as he set about stabilizing the Scotland innings. He seemed impervious to his team's position it implied when he came to the wicket with two batsmen out and only nine balls bowled in the match.
Machan made a statement with an early pull for four off Southee and showed a full variety of shots as his innings developed in a critical 97-run fifth-wicket partnership with Berrington which made the match less one-sided.
McCullum finally achieved the breakthrough when he introduced Corey Anderson from the southern end and the allrounder dismissed Machan then Berrington in his first two overs. After an innings of rigid discipline, Machan mistimed a pull shot and was caught by McCullum, while Berrington reached his 50 from 79 balls and was out next ball, hooking to Adam Milne at fine leg.
Anderson also removed Rob Taylor (14) to finish with 3-18 while Vettori helped wrap up the tail, taking 3-24.
