New Delhi: As the ICC Cricket World Cup kicks off with an opening ceremony today,   Prime Minister Narendra Modi greets Team India and asks them to play spiritedly.

In a series of tweets Modi said, “As the 2015 Cricket World Cup begins, my best wishes to the Indian Cricket Team.

Commending on the leadership of  Mahendra Singh Dhoni, he exuded confidence that Team India would once again become the World champions.

The Prime Minister also sent individual tweets to Team India players encouraging them will play to their full potential.Earlier in the day, the biggest cricketing extravaganza began in Christchurch, New Zealand

Thousands of fans crammed up in leafy Hagley Park to see the launch of the first World Cup in New Zealand and Australia in 23 years. The formal part of it began with a lone bagpiper and ended with booming fireworks display — the biggest in the city's history.

International Cricket Council chief executive David Richardson unveiled the Cricket World Cup trophy, saying it was a symbol of the ICC's values of excellence, integrity and inclusion.
