When a Gavaskar letter consoled weeping Sachin

New Delhi: Despite topping the batting chart in 1986-87 Sachin tendulkar was ignored for the coveted Junior Cricketer of the Year award. That left him very disappointed and he reportedly wept inconsolably.However what consoled him was an innocuous letter from his hero Sunil Gavaskar whjo asked him to get disappointed and suggested him to keep on playing.That letter was like shot in the arm for Sachin.Sachin was just 14 years old and was making runs in Mumbai's school tournaments. After two years in 1989 Sachin was selected for Indian team.He was running across Mumbai, participating in as many domestic matches as he could. Mumbai takes immense pride in its school cricket. One such match witnessed him rake up that famous partnership with Vinod Kambli. Sachin, leading Sharsdashram Vidyamandir in Harris Shield, teamed up with Vinod Kambli to create a world record partnership. The game was played against St. Xavier Fort School. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Sachin's side lost its openers early. Vinod Kambli came in at number 3, followed by Sachin. The duo joined forces with the side at 84/2. At stumps, Sachin was unbeaten on 192 and Kambli on 182 not out. On day two, the pair went on rampage. By lunch, the Shardashram score read 748/2, with Sachin unbeaten on 326 and Kambli batting on 349. While Tendulkar was putting bowlers to sword in Harris Shield, Giles Shield was also underway, and Sachin's name was registered for the latter as well. Post his marathon innings, a young Tendulkar rushed for the Giles Shield match, only to score a century there.
