Napier: Brendon McCullum will lead unchanged New Zealand squad for their five-game ODI series against India, which starts in Napier on Sunday.

The only absentee of note is Auckland lefthander Colin Munro, who has been tagged as the backup batsman.

Munro was released for the final ODI against the West Indies in Hamilton last week and has been returned to Auckland to prepare for the resumption of Plunket Shield first-class cricket next week.

The spin component will again be in the hands of offspinners Nathan McCullum and part-timer Kane Williamson.

Young quick Adam Milne, who made a big impact against the West Indies in Auckland last weekend, clicking over 150kph twice in his four-over spell in the opening T20, is one of five fast-medium bowlers in the squad.

"It was pleasing to see every player stand up at some stage of that series," national selection manager Bruce Edgar said.

India are the world's No 1 ranked ODI side, while New Zealand sit eighth on the ladder.

New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson said the team is fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead.

"Matching yourself against the best in the world is what you play international cricket for and I know the guys are
buzzing about this opportunity. It's also an important part of our build-up for next year's World Cup where India are the defending champions," he said.

The squad for the two Test matches, which follow the ODI series, will be named later this month.

After Sunday's match here, the five match series will continue to Hamilton (January 22 and 28), Auckland (January 25), and Wellington (January 31), before two tests in Auckland and Wellington.
