India's top-ranked tennis ace Sumit Nagal will be facing China's Shang Juncheng in the men's singles round two event at the Australian Open 2024 on Thursday, January 18.
Nagal stunned the world by beating the 31st-seeded Alexander Bublik in the first round by 6-4, 6-2, 7-5. He became the only third Indian male tennis player after Leander Paes and Somdev Devvaraman to reach the second round of the Australian Open in the men's singles event.
The 26-year-old Sumit previously reached the second round of the US Open in 2020, his biggest achievement. He is currently ranked 137 in the ATP men's singles chart after a sensational win over Bublik.
His opponent, Shang, is ranked 140th in the ATP chart and is playing his first second-round game in Grand Slam history. Shang defeated United States'Mackenzie McDonald in the first round and is facing Nagal for the first time.
