An Indian team spokesman said Dhawan and star batsman Virat Kohli had recovered from the injuries sustained in the Gabba nets before play on the fourth morning of the second Test, and would be fine for the MCG fixture.

India complained about the state of the practice wickets at the Gabba, but much of the post-game wash-up focused on the confusion in the tourists' dressing room, where a last-minute decision was made for Kohli to resume the innings in Dhawan's place.

Dhawan returned later to score 81 with a bruised wrist, but the Indian board has reportedly questioned why he didn't come out to bat in the first place.

"It was surprising that he didn't do so from the beginning, because that would have helped us start in an advantageous position," a board official said.

"It was a matter of winning the first hour and we might have won this Test on a deteriorating wicket. We have to know about the gravity of the injury."

India collapsed in the face of a Mitchell Johnson onslaught to lose six wickets in a session. Dhawan helped the tourists set Australia a modest target, which the home side reached with four wickets to spare.
