New Delhi: Ex- BCCI president and the president of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Sharad Pawar may possibly contest for the post of BCCI president. He has been authorized by the managing committee of MCA to attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) which has been postponed three times due to IPL match fixing saga.
The new date of the AGM is yet to be announced. But as per a Supreme Court order, the AGM should be held latest by March 4 as told by the court.
Meanwhile sources close to Sharad Pawar had expressed his keenness to contest even when he was recovering at a Mumbai hospital, after fracturing his leg in December.
An official in the BCCI has stated that if Justice Lodha Committee decides against N.Srinivasan that he cannot contest the next BCCI presidential elections then the going for Sharad Pawar will be much easier.
The point in question is a part of the answer to Question No.7 in the 138-page judgement delivered by the two-member Supreme Court bench on January 22.
The crucial Section (v) reads: "The constitution of the Committee or its deliberations shall not affect the ensuing elections which the BCCI shall hold within six weeks from the date of this order in accordance with the prevalent rules and regulations subject to the condition that no one who has any commercial interest in the BCCI events (including Mr. N. Srinivasan) shall be eligible for contesting the elections for any post whatsoever.
We make it clear that the disqualification for contesting elections applicable to those who are holding any commercial interest in BCCI events shall hold good and continue till such time the person concerned holds such commercial interest or till the Committee considers and awards suitable punishment to those liable for the same; whichever is later."
Meanwhile officials who know Srinivasan's ways of functioning said that if at all he is not allowed to contest the presidential elections he may put up a dummy candidate in his place.
